Set in 1956 at the Hermitage art museum in Leningrad, this biting and poignant play probes the rights of an individual, artist and woman in a society with little regard for personal freedom. As mother and daughter attempt to identify a painting by the famous French painter, Henri Matisse, they also struggle to agree on the right to forge one’s own identity and the role of familial obligation in defining our lives.
